How the Forklift Tilt Cylinder Works

Tilt cylinder position on forklift mast

Two tilt cylinders — one on each side of the mast — work as a matched pair. Each cylinder connects the forklift frame (trunnion mount) to the mast structure (clevis mount), converting linear rod stroke into angular mast movement.

When the rod extends, the mast tilts forward — angling the forks downward to engage pallet openings or place loads on racking. When the rod retracts, the mast tilts backward — pressing the load against the carriage backrest for safe transport. Backward tilt is the larger angle, providing a stronger gravitational lock on the load during driving, braking, and turning.

The tilt cylinder is the most safety-critical hydraulic component on the forklift. An integrated load-holding check valve at the 2-G1/4 port locks the mast at any set angle — even if a hose bursts, the pump stops, or the engine shuts off. This prevents uncontrolled forward mast drift that could cause the load to slide off the forks. Browse the full forklift hydraulic cylinder range.

Forward Tilt vs Backward Tilt

Rod Extension → Mast Tilts Forward

The rod extends through the full stroke, pushing the mast top forward. The forks angle downward for load pickup. Forward tilt is the smaller angle — limiting the risk of loads sliding off during the pickup motion. Used for engaging pallet openings and placing loads on racking.

Rod Retraction → Mast Tilts Backward

The rod retracts, pulling the mast backward. The forks angle upward, pressing the load against the backrest. This is the primary safety position — the mast stays backward for 90% of operating time. The load-holding valve locks this angle without continuous hydraulic pressure.

Key Advantages

  • Integrated load-holding valve — pilot-operated check valve at the 2-G1/4 port locks the mast at any angle under hydraulic system failure. Prevents uncontrolled forward tilt that could drop the load.
  • 7 specifications available — bore Φ60 to Φ100 mm, stroke 32 to 193 mm, installation distance 109 to 565 mm. One cylinder model covers a wide range of counterbalanced forklifts without custom engineering.
  • 27 MPa maximum withstand pressure — 1.49× safety factor over the 18.1 MPa working pressure. Absorbs transient pressure spikes from rapid tilt reversal and fork impact loads.
  • 2-G1/4 BSP hydraulic ports — standard G1/4 BSP thread interface for straightforward integration with existing forklift hydraulic circuits. No adapter fittings required.
  • Hard-chrome rod, Ra ≤0.2 µm — precision-honed rod surface for minimum seal friction and maximum seal life in the short-stroke, high-frequency cycling pattern of forklift tilt cylinders.
  • OEM-grade quality — manufactured to the same specifications and quality standards as original equipment cylinders fitted to major forklift brands worldwide. Every cylinder is 100% pressure tested and dimensionally inspected.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I select the correct specification?

Match the bore diameter (D), rod diameter (d), stroke (S), and installation distance (L) to your forklift's original tilt cylinder. The 7 specifications in the table above cover bore Φ60 to Φ100 mm. If your forklift requires a specification not listed, contact Korea Ever-Power for custom sizing.

Does this tilt cylinder include the load-holding valve?

Yes — the load-holding check valve is integrated or pre-fitted at the 2-G1/4 port as standard on all specifications. The valve locks the mast angle if hydraulic supply is lost.

Are the tilt cylinders sold individually or in pairs?

Both options are available. Matched pairs (recommended) ensure identical force output and speed on both sides of the mast, preventing mast twist during tilting.

What does 2-G1/4 mean?

The cylinder has 2 hydraulic ports with G1/4 BSP (British Standard Pipe) thread connections — a standard interface size for forklift tilt cylinders in this bore range, compatible with standard hydraulic hose fittings.

How many tilt cylinders does a forklift use?

Two — one on each side of the mast, working as a matched pair. Both must produce identical force and speed. Korea Ever-Power supplies tilt cylinders in matched pairs from the same manufacturing batch.

What other forklift cylinder models does Ever-Power manufacture?

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★May 2026

"We replaced tilt cylinders on 14 forklifts with the Φ70 specification tilt cylinder. Installation distance and port positions matched our existing setup exactly — direct bolt-in, no modifications. After 9 months of 2-shift operation, zero leaks across all 28 cylinders."

J. Henderson — Fleet Maintenance Manager, UK

★★★★★Feb 2026

"The integrated load-holding valves at the 2-G1/4 ports were the deciding factor. Our previous aftermarket cylinders came without valves. Korea Ever-Power supplies this tilt cylinder with the valve pre-fitted and tested — saves 45 minutes per cylinder on installation."

M. Bauer — Workshop Foreman, Germany

★★★★☆Oct 2025

"Good quality at approximately 35% below OEM list price. We ordered the Φ80 and Φ100 specifications for our mixed fleet. Rod surface finish measured Ra 0.15 µm — better than spec. Delivery was 6 weeks."

L. Santos — Procurement Manager, Brazil

★★★★★Jul 2025

"Ordered three different tilt cylinder specifications in a single order — Φ70, Φ80, and Φ100. All shipped together, all passed incoming inspection on first check. Consistent quality across specifications."

Y. Tanaka — Service Engineer, Japan

★★★★★Mar 2025

"Third fleet order. Standardised on Korea Ever-Power forklift tilt cylinders across our 45-forklift fleet. Warranty returns: zero. Cost saving versus OEM genuine parts: 30–40%."

P. van der Berg — Technical Director, Netherlands
