Reach Stacker

Reach Stacker Steering Cylinder

A reach stacker weighs 70–100 tonnes when carrying a loaded container. Steering this mass through narrow container rows demands hydraulic cylinders with instant response, zero backlash, and the durability to handle thousands of steering cycles per shift — shift after shift, year after year.

Steering a 100-Tonne Machine in a 4-Metre Aisle

Reach Stacker Steering Cylinder

A loaded reach stacker (vehicle + container = 70–100 tonnes) must navigate container yard aisles that are only 4–5 metres wider than the machine itself. The driver makes continuous steering corrections as the stacker approaches, enters, and exits each container row. Every steering input flows through the steering cylinder — which must convert hydraulic pressure to wheel angle instantly and accurately.

Unlike the empty container stacker steering cylinder (#22), the reach stacker version handles much higher axle loads (25–50 tonnes per steered axle vs 8–15 tonnes on an empty stacker). This requires larger bore sizes (up to 200 mm) and heavier-duty rod end bearings to handle the increased tire friction and lateral forces.

Korea Ever-Power engineers the steering cylinder for each reach stacker model's axle load, tire size, and steering geometry. Browse the offshore hydraulic cylinder range for the telescopic (#24) and luffing (#25) cylinders.

Key Advantages for Heavy-Duty Steering

  • Heavy-duty rod end bearings — rated for the lateral forces generated by 50-tonne axle loads on rough port surfaces. Precision-ground spherical bearings with grease nipples for field lubrication.
  • Instant response under load — the steering cylinder must overcome the higher tire-to-ground friction of a loaded reach stacker. Internal flow paths and port sizing are optimised for minimum response time at maximum axle load.
  • Zero backlash — any play in the steering linkage is amplified by the vehicle's mass. At 100 tonnes GVW, even 1 mm of backlash creates unpredictable handling. The cylinder rod ends, pin joints, and seals are specified for zero-play operation.
  • Field-serviceable design — seal replacement and rod end bearing change can be performed on-site without removing the cylinder from the stacker. Seal kits and bearing kits are available from Korea Ever-Power.

FAQ

How does the reach stacker steering cylinder differ from the empty stacker version?

The reach stacker version handles much higher axle loads (25–50 tonnes vs 8–15 tonnes on empty stackers). This requires larger bore sizes, heavier rod end bearings, and higher flow rates for responsive steering under load.

How many steering cylinders does a reach stacker use?

Typically 2 per steered axle — one on each wheel. Most reach stackers have a single rear-steered axle.

What is the typical steering cylinder lifespan?

With proper maintenance (seal replacement every 4,000–6,000 hours, bearing lubrication every 500 hours), the cylinder body and rod last the full stacker life (15–20 years / 30,000+ hours).

Can the cylinder be retrofitted on existing reach stackers?

Yes — Korea Ever-Power manufactures replacements for Kalmar, Hyster, Linde, SANY, Fantuzzi, and other OEM reach stackers.

Can all 3 reach stacker cylinders be ordered together?

Yes — telescopic (#24), luffing (#25), and steering (#26) as a coordinated package. Browse the offshore hydraulic cylinder range.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★Jun 2026

"Steering response on our 45-tonne Kalmar reach stacker is noticeably better with the Korea Ever-Power cylinders. The zero-backlash bearings made an immediate difference — our drivers reported it on the first shift."

H. Nakamura — Operations Manager, Japanese container terminal

★★★★★Feb 2026

"Complete reach stacker set (telescopic + luffing + steering) for 3 new SANY stackers. All cylinders fit without modification. Single supplier, single shipment, single invoice."

P. Chen — Equipment Director, Chinese port development

★★★★☆Oct 2025

"Good heavy-duty steering cylinders. After 10 months of 24/7 operation, the rod surface and bearings are still in excellent condition. The grease nipples are accessible without removing any covers — practical design for field maintenance."

J. Otieno — Workshop Manager, Kenyan container terminal

★★★★★Jul 2025

"Replacement steering cylinders for our Fantuzzi reach stacker fleet. Korea Ever-Power matched the original Italian dimensions and upgraded the rod end bearings to a heavier-duty specification. Better than OEM."

M. Rossi — Fleet Engineering, Italian port logistics

★★★★★Mar 2025

"We standardised on Korea Ever-Power for all reach stacker cylinders across our 5-terminal network. Consistent quality, competitive pricing, and responsive technical support when we need sizing assistance."
