Drilling Platform Steel Wire Rope Tensioner Cylinder
Drilling Platform Wire Rope Tensioner Cylinder
Wire ropes on a jack-up platform carry the full weight of the platform during jacking. This cylinder tensions them through a pulley system — 8,500 KN of thrust force, a 93.5% rod-to-bore ratio, and the highest force output in the jack-up hydraulic system.

How Wire Rope Tensioning Works on a Jack-up Platform

Some jack-up platforms use a wire-rope-and-pulley jacking system instead of (or in combination with) a rack-and-pinion mechanism. Steel wire ropes run along each leg, pass over pulleys at the top, and are anchored to the platform hull. The tensioner cylinder pushes against the rope anchor point, applying thrust force that is transferred through the pulley system to tension the wire ropes — this tension is what holds the platform at elevation.
The 93.5% rod-to-bore ratio (580 mm rod inside 620 mm bore) is the highest in the entire offshore hydraulic cylinder range. This extreme ratio produces a very small annular area — meaning the cylinder is designed almost exclusively for high thrust force on the extension stroke, with minimal retraction force. The wire rope only needs tension in one direction.
Multiple Tension Configurations
Different platforms require different wire rope tensions depending on platform weight, leg count, rope diameter, and pulley arrangement. Korea Ever-Power offers standard tension configurations and custom designs:
Light-duty jack-up barges and maintenance platforms. Smaller wire rope diameter, lower platform weight.
Mid-range drilling platforms. Standard offshore exploration and production installations.
Heavy-duty platforms with large topside equipment loads or harsh weather operating environments.
Key Design Advantages

- 93.5% rod-to-bore ratio — maximises the bore-side piston area for thrust force while leaving a minimal annular area. The cylinder produces 8,500 KN of push force at 32 MPa — among the highest of any single hydraulic cylinder in offshore service.
- Forged barrel and rod — the barrel is forged from a single billet, deep-hole bored, and honed. The 580 mm rod is forged, turned, and chrome-plated (or laser-clad) as a single piece. No welded joints in the load path.
- ️ Marine-grade protection — the tensioner cylinder operates inside the platform structure but is exposed to salt air, condensation, and occasional wave splash. Anti-corrosion treatment on all external and internal surfaces.
- ⚙️ Integrated pressure relief — prevents rope overtension that could snap the wire or damage the pulley system. The relief valve setting is calibrated to the specific rope's breaking strength safety factor (typically 3:1 to 5:1).

Frequently Asked Questions
What Our Customers Say
"The 1,112 KN tensioner cylinders on our drilling jack-up have been performing flawlessly. The 93.5% rod ratio was initially a concern for our engineers (such a thin annular gap), but the sealing solution works well — zero leakage after 10 months of offshore service."
Dr. H. Wang — Chief Engineer, Chinese offshore drilling company
"We ordered tensioner cylinders in the 1,245 KN configuration for a heavy-duty jack-up in the North Sea. The integrated relief valve was calibrated to exactly 3.5:1 safety factor on our wire rope breaking strength. Korea Ever-Power understood the rope mechanics — not all cylinder manufacturers do."
J. McGregor — Rigging Superintendent, UK offshore contractor
"Good cylinders at a competitive price. The 889 KN configuration fits our smaller wind farm installation jack-up perfectly. Delivery took 10 weeks. The only suggestion: the mounting flange bolt pattern could have been communicated earlier in the engineering phase."
L. Jensen — Project Engineer, Danish wind energy contractor
"Second order — tensioner cylinders for a second jack-up platform. Same spec, same quality, same lead time. Consistency matters when you have a fleet of identical platforms."
A. Osman — Fleet Manager, Egyptian offshore company
"The FEA report for the tensioner cylinder was thorough — the stress analysis under maximum thrust showed the safety factor on the barrel wall was 4.2:1. This gave our LR surveyor full confidence to approve the design without additional prototype testing."
Eng. N. Andrianov — Classification Lead, Russian drilling contractor
