Aerial Work Platform Electric Cylinder

Aerial work platform electric cylinder — a fundamentally different actuator: no hydraulic oil, no pump, no hoses. An electric motor drives a precision ball screw or roller screw inside a sealed housing, producing linear thrust from 1 KN to 1,000 KN at voltages from 24V (battery-powered platforms) to 380V (industrial production lines). Zero leak risk makes the electric cylinder ideal for indoor scissor lifts, food-processing facilities, pharmaceutical plants, and any environment where hydraulic oil contamination is unacceptable. Aerial Work Platform Electric Cylinder

No oil. No pump. No hoses. No leaks. The electric cylinder replaces hydraulic power with an electric motor and precision screw — delivering the same linear thrust without a drop of hydraulic fluid. The future of indoor aerial platforms, clean rooms, and food-grade facilities.

Not Hydraulic — A Fundamentally Different Actuator Technology

Aerial Work Platform Electric Cylinder

Every other cylinder in this 31-product catalogue uses hydraulic oil under pressure to produce linear motion. The electric cylinder uses an electric motor rotating a precision ball screw (or roller screw for higher loads) — converting rotary motor torque into linear thrust through the screw's helical thread. No hydraulic pump, no oil reservoir, no pressure hoses, no directional control valves, no oil filter. The entire power system is a motor controller (inverter), a power cable, and the electric cylinder itself.

This elimination of the hydraulic circuit produces three decisive advantages for aerial work platforms: zero leak risk (no oil to spill on finished floors, food surfaces, or clean-room environments), reduced noise (no pump whine — only the quiet hum of an electric motor), and precise position control (the motor controller knows the screw position to within 0.1 mm — enabling programmable platform heights without limit switches).

Korea Ever-Power manufactures electric cylinders as the first of seven aerial work platform actuators — covering both electric and hydraulic technologies to match any platform OEM's design philosophy.

Electric vs Hydraulic — When to Choose Which Technology

Choose electric when:

Indoor use where oil leaks are unacceptable (warehouses, retail, food processing, hospitals). Low-noise environments (theatres, offices, residential buildings). Battery-powered platforms where hydraulic pump electrical draw is too high. Applications requiring precise, repeatable position control (automated production lines, robotic positioning).

Choose hydraulic when:

Outdoor construction sites where oil leaks are acceptable. Very high force requirements (above 1,000 KN). Continuous-duty applications where heat dissipation through the hydraulic circuit provides natural cooling. Environments with extreme shock loading or debris impact — hydraulic cylinders absorb impact through fluid compressibility; electric screws can be damaged by sudden shock loads. Applications Beyond Aerial Platforms

Electric cylinder applications

The electric cylinder's zero-leak, high-precision characteristics make it valuable far beyond aerial platforms. Korea Ever-Power supplies electric cylinders for fire truck aerial ladders (24V/48V battery operation during engine-off rescue), automated production line positioning (380V industrial, ±0.1 mm repeatability), stage and theatre rigging (quiet operation during live performance), solar panel tracking systems (outdoor, weatherproofed, low-speed continuous rotation), and medical equipment positioning (clean, precise, vibration-free).

The voltage range (24V to 380V) covers battery-powered mobile equipment (24V/48V), single-phase building power (220V), and three-phase industrial supply (380V). Each voltage variant uses a matched motor and controller — the screw mechanism and thrust housing are common across all voltages.

Manufacturing Process

The ball screw shaft is precision-ground to IT5 tolerance — achieving ±0.05 mm positional accuracy over the full stroke. The screw nut is pre-loaded to eliminate axial backlash (≤0.02 mm). The thrust tube (the equivalent of a hydraulic cylinder barrel) is machined from seamless steel tube with a hard-anodised or nickel-plated internal bore for corrosion resistance. The motor is a servo or brushless DC type, directly coupled to the screw through a planetary gearbox for torque multiplication.

Every electric cylinder is full-stroke tested under rated load, position-accuracy tested (verifying ±0.1 mm repeatability at 10 random positions), and overload tested at 1.5× rated thrust to verify the screw's structural integrity.

FAQ

Can an electric cylinder directly replace a hydraulic cylinder?

In many aerial platform applications, yes — the electric cylinder can be designed with the same mounting geometry, stroke, and force as the hydraulic cylinder it replaces. The platform OEM must also remove the hydraulic pump, reservoir, hoses, and valves — and add a motor controller. The net result is usually a simpler, lighter, and cleaner platform with lower maintenance cost.

What is the duty cycle limitation?

Electric cylinders generate heat in the motor and screw during operation. Unlike hydraulic systems (which cool through the oil circuit), electric cylinders rely on natural convection. Most electric cylinders are rated for 25–50% duty cycle (on for 15–30 seconds, off for 30–45 seconds). Continuous-duty applications require oversized motors or forced-air cooling. Hydraulic cylinders have no duty-cycle limitation.

Is the electric cylinder suitable for outdoor aerial platforms?

Yes — with appropriate IP rating (IP65 or IP67 for rain and dust protection). The electric cylinder itself is sealed, but the motor and encoder must also be weatherproofed. Korea Ever-Power offers IP65 and IP67 variants for outdoor mobile equipment. Browse telescopic cylinders and forklift cylinders.
