Trailing Suction Dredger Overflow Cylinder
Trailing Suction Dredger Overflow Cylinder
The hopper fills with a slurry of water and sediment. The overflow cylinder raises and lowers a vertical tube — the relief tube — to set the water level. Lower the tube: water overflows earlier, carrying fine sediment away. Raise it: more water stays, heavier load. A 6-metre stroke gives the operator full control over cargo density.

Why Overflow Height Controls Dredging Productivity

When a TSHD dredges, the suction pipe delivers a slurry of water and sediment into the hopper. The sediment settles to the bottom; the excess water must be removed. The overflow tube — a vertical pipe inside the hopper — sets the maximum water level. Water above the tube rim flows over and out through the hull.
Lowering the overflow tube reduces the water level, allowing excess water to drain earlier in the loading cycle. This increases the sediment concentration in the hopper (more tonnes of dry material per voyage) but also increases the rate of fine sediment loss through the overflow. Raising the tube retains more water but dilutes the cargo.
The overflow cylinder's 6,000 mm stroke gives the operator continuous adjustment across the full hopper depth — from maximum retention (tube fully raised) to rapid drainage (tube fully lowered). Optimising this balance can increase payload by 10–25% per voyage on the same vessel. Browse the offshore hydraulic cylinder range for related TSHD products.
Overflow Cylinder in the TSHD Hydraulic System
The overflow cylinder is one of four main hydraulic cylinder types on a TSHD. Each serves a distinct role in the dredging cycle:
Absorbs wave motion to keep the draghead on the seabed at constant pressure.
Deploys and recovers the suction pipe assembly from the hull.
Opens the hopper bottom for rapid bottom discharge of dredged material.
Controls the overflow tube height to optimise cargo density during loading.
Key Advantages of the Overflow Cylinder

- 6,000 mm stroke — the longest stroke among TSHD hopper cylinders. Full-depth adjustment of the overflow height, from hopper floor level to maximum waterline. Enables operation across varying hopper fill conditions.
- Compact bore (280 mm) — the overflow tube is lightweight compared to the mud door or suction pipe. The cylinder is sized for the tube weight plus sediment drag forces — not for massive hull-splitting or pipe-lifting loads. This makes it the most compact cylinder on the TSHD.
- ️ Corrosion-resistant — the cylinder operates inside the hopper, continuously immersed in a slurry of seawater, sand, silt, and clay. Anti-corrosion rod treatment and abrasion-resistant seals are standard.
- ⚙️ Customisable force and speed — working pressure, bore, stroke, and valve integration are tailored to the specific TSHD model. Contact the Korea Ever-Power hydraulic cylinder team for sizing.

FAQ
What Our Customers Say
"The 5,800 mm stroke overflow cylinders on our 10,000 m³ TSHD have been running for 14 months. The laser-clad rods are holding up remarkably well in the abrasive hopper environment. Our previous hard-chrome rods needed replating after every major drydock."
Capt. S. Andersen — Fleet Captain, Norwegian dredging company
"Compact and well-made. The 280 mm bore is exactly right for the overflow tube weight on our 4,000 m³ TSHD. No over-engineering, no unnecessary cost. The cylinders fit into the existing hopper brackets without modification."
M. Bakker — Maintenance Engineer, Netherlands
"Ordered 2 overflow cylinders for a TSHD refit. Quality is good, delivery was on time (9 weeks). The abrasion-resistant seals are noticeably tougher than the OEM seals we had been using — holding up better in our sandy dredging conditions."
J. Ferreira — Chief Engineer, Brazilian dredging contractor
"We combined an order for overflow cylinders, mud door cylinders, and heave compensation cylinders for the same TSHD. Korea Ever-Power handled the complete set — same delivery date, same material batch, same quality. Much easier than sourcing from 3 different suppliers."
T. Kwon — Procurement Director, South Korean fleet
"We needed overflow cylinders with DNV class documentation for our internationally flagged TSHD. The factory provided material certificates, welding procedures, and witnessed test reports that satisfied our DNV surveyor without any re-work."
