What Each Cylinder Does on a Boom Lift

A self-propelled articulating boom lift is one of the most hydraulically complex aerial work platforms — with up to 8 separate cylinders performing different functions simultaneously. Unlike a scissor lift (one lifting cylinder, one steering cylinder), a boom lift requires coordinated multi-axis movement to position the platform in three-dimensional space:
- Steering (EP-HCYY11112007 / 12) — drives the wheels for machine positioning. The EP-HCYY11112007 is a double-rod design (100×2 mm stroke) for the drive axle; the EP-HCYY11112012 (Φ63, 320 mm stroke) steers the non-drive axle for four-wheel steering capability.
- Upper Leveling (EP-HCYY11112008) — the shortest-stroke cylinder in the set (only 60 mm). Keeps the work platform level as the boom angle changes. Operates at the highest pressure (25 MPa) because it must react quickly to maintain platform orientation.
- Main Boom Angle (EP-HCYY11112005 / 10) — raises and lowers the main boom section. Two models for different boom configurations: the EP-HCYY11112005 (Φ55, 506 mm) for shorter booms and the EP-HCYY11112010 (Φ70, 555 mm) for longer-reach platforms.
- Folding Boom Angle (EP-HCYY11112011) — the heaviest cylinder in the set at 137 kg. Controls the angle of the articulating (folding) boom section. Its 1,458 mm stroke provides the full range of motion needed for over-and-up reach to clear obstacles.
- Boom Extension (EP-HCYY11112009) — telescopes the boom to extend the platform's horizontal reach. At Φ110 bore and 100 kg, this is the second-largest cylinder, operating at 23 MPa / 34 MPa max to handle the cantilever loads at full extension.
- Lifting (EP-HCYY11112006) — a dedicated vertical lifting cylinder with 1,260 mm stroke, used for the initial platform elevation before the boom articulates. Operates at 18 MPa with a 54 kg weight.
Boom Lift vs Scissor Lift — Why More Cylinders?
The boom extends outward and upward — reaching over obstacles, around building facades, and into positions that require horizontal reach. Each boom section needs its own angle and extension cylinder. The platform must stay level through all these movements, requiring a dedicated leveling cylinder.
The scissor mechanism moves straight up. One lifting cylinder unfolds the scissors; one steering cylinder drives the machine. No boom articulation, no extension, no leveling. The platform stays level by design. Simpler, but limited to vertical-only access.

Key Advantages
- Complete 8-cylinder set from one supplier — steering, leveling, boom angle, boom extension, and lifting cylinders all sourced from Korea Ever-Power. Eliminates multi-supplier coordination for boom lift builds and rebuilds.
- Pressure ratings matched to function — each cylinder is rated for its specific load profile. The leveling cylinder operates at 25/30 MPa for rapid response; the steering at 10/15 MPa for smooth control; the extension at 23/34 MPa for heavy cantilever loads.
- Holding valves on all critical cylinders — boom angle, extension, and lifting cylinders include pilot-operated check valves that lock the boom at any position under hydraulic failure. Workers at height depend on these valves.
- ⚡ Weight range 7–137 kg — from the compact 7 kg double-rod steering cylinder to the 137 kg folding boom actuator. Every cylinder is optimised for its specific position — no over-engineering, no unnecessary weight on the boom structure.
- Outdoor-rated sealing and corrosion protection — boom lifts operate on construction sites, in weather, and in dusty environments. All cylinders are supplied with hard-chrome rods (Ra ≤0.2 µm) and weather-rated seals.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Our Customers Say
"Full cylinder rebuild on 4 articulating boom lifts. We ordered all 8 models as a complete set per machine. Every cylinder matched the original mounting dimensions. The boom movements are smooth and the platform leveling is precise — our operators noticed the improvement immediately."
R. Schneider — Rental Fleet Engineer, Germany
"We replaced just the folding boom cylinder (EP-HCYY11112011) — the original had developed a slow leak. At 137 kg it required a chain hoist for removal, but the new cylinder dropped straight in. No boom drift after 8 months of daily use."
T. Bergström — Service Technician, Sweden
"Good quality at approximately 35% below OEM prices. We tested the boom extension cylinder (EP-HCYY11112009) on our hydraulic bench — pressure held at 34 MPa for 10 minutes with zero leakage. Chrome finish on the 100 kg cylinder is uniform across the full 815 mm rod length."
C. Oliveira — QC Manager, Brazil
"The leveling cylinder (EP-HCYY11112008) keeps the platform perfectly level through all boom movements. The 60 mm stroke responds quickly enough that our workers don't notice any platform tilt during boom articulation."
M. Dumont — Operations Manager, France
"We manage a mixed aerial fleet — scissor lifts and boom lifts. Korea Ever-Power supplies cylinders for both types, which simplifies our procurement. Consistent quality standards across the entire product range."
H. Virtanen — Fleet Director, Finland
