Fork Positioner vs Side Shift — Two Different Functions

Forklift attachment with fork positioner and side shift

A fork positioner adjusts the distance between the two forks. Without a positioner, the operator must dismount, pull the locking pin on each fork, manually slide the forks to the new spacing, and re-lock the pins — a process that takes 3–5 minutes per adjustment. A hydraulic fork positioner does this in seconds, from the operator's seat, controlled by a valve lever or joystick. The fork spacing cylinder sits inside the attachment frame, connected to each fork arm by a linkage mechanism.

A side shift moves the entire fork assembly — both forks together — left or right by 100–150 mm from the mast centreline. This allows the operator to fine-tune the load position without repositioning the forklift itself. The side shift cylinder is mounted horizontally across the carriage and pushes the fork carrier along a rail. It eliminates the need for precise forklift positioning on every pick and place cycle — saving time and reducing tyre wear from constant steering corrections.

Both attachment types are available as integrated units (positioner + side shift combined) or as standalone attachments. Korea Ever-Power supplies the hydraulic cylinders for all configurations. Browse the complete forklift hydraulic cylinder range.

Why Do Attachment Cylinders Operate at Higher Pressure?

The fork positioner and side shift cylinders operate at 18–25 MPa — higher than the standard forklift tilt cylinder (18.1 MPa) and steering cylinder (16 MPa). The reason is space constraint:

Compact Bore, High Pressure

The cylinder must fit inside the attachment housing — there is limited space between the fork arms and the carriage frame. A smaller bore at higher pressure produces the same force as a larger bore at lower pressure, while occupying less space.

35 MPa Burst Rating

The 1.4× safety factor (25 MPa working → 35 MPa max) accounts for shock loads when the forks contact pallets, racking, or the ground during positioning. The attachment cylinder experiences more impact loading than a mast cylinder.

Φ125 Heavy-Duty Option

The EP-HCYY11112030 at Φ125 bore and 25 MPa is designed for heavy-duty clamp or rotator attachments — where the cylinder must grip, compress, or rotate loads up to several tonnes. At 38 kg, this is the heaviest cylinder in the forklift attachment range.

Key Advantages

  • Hydraulic fork adjustment from the seat — eliminates manual fork repositioning. The operator adjusts fork spacing in seconds using a valve lever, without dismounting. Saves 3–5 minutes per pallet size change.
  • 9 specifications from Φ40 to Φ125 mm — covering light-duty fork spacers (Φ40, 6 kg) through heavy-duty clamp/rotator actuators (Φ125, 38 kg). One supplier for all forklift attachment cylinder requirements.
  • 25 MPa / 35 MPa pressure rating — high working pressure allows compact cylinder designs that fit inside the constrained space of forklift attachment frames, while the 35 MPa burst rating handles shock loads from pallet contact.
  • Side shift precision — the side shift cylinder provides 100–150 mm of lateral fork movement for precise load placement without repositioning the forklift. Reduces cycle time and tyre wear in repetitive stacking operations.
  • Hard-chrome rods, precision seals — the short stroke and high-frequency cycling of attachment cylinders demands excellent rod surface quality and high-performance seals. All cylinders are supplied with Ra ≤0.2 µm rod finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a fork positioner and a side shift?

A fork positioner adjusts the distance between the two forks — for example, narrowing the spacing for small pallets or widening for large loads. A side shift moves both forks together left or right from the mast centreline for precise lateral positioning. Many integrated attachments combine both functions in one unit.

Which cylinder model do I need?

This depends on your attachment type and forklift capacity. Provide the attachment manufacturer, model number, and the original cylinder dimensions (bore, rod, stroke, installation distance) to Korea Ever-Power for exact matching. The EP-HCYY11112028 through EP-HCYY11112031 models cover a wide range of attachment types.

Why does the EP-HCYY11112030 weigh 38 kg?

At Φ125 mm bore with 25 MPa working pressure, the cylinder wall and end cap thickness must be substantial to contain the hydraulic force safely. This is a heavy-duty cylinder designed for clamp or rotator attachments that must grip and manipulate loads of several tonnes.

Why does the EP-HCYY11112029 have a lower working pressure (18 MPa)?

The Φ90 bore provides sufficient force at 18 MPa for its intended application. The larger bore area compensates for the lower pressure — the total force output is comparable to the smaller-bore models operating at 25 MPa. The lower pressure also extends seal life and reduces heat generation in the hydraulic circuit.

Can these cylinders be used with third-party forklift attachments?

Yes — the cylinders are standard hydraulic actuators compatible with any forklift attachment that uses the matching bore, stroke, and mounting dimensions. Common compatible brands include Cascade, KAUP, Bolzoni, and other major attachment manufacturers.

Can I order the complete forklift cylinder set?

Yes — tilt cylinders (EP-HCYY11112001), lifting cylinders (EP-HCYY11112000), steering cylinders (EP-HCYY11112002), and attachment cylinders can all be ordered as a coordinated set. Browse the forklift hydraulic cylinder range.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★Jun 2026

"Replaced fork positioner cylinders on 6 attachments with the EP-HCYY11112028. The Φ70 bore at 25 MPa provides noticeably faster fork spacing adjustment than the original cylinders. Installation distance and mounting pin positions matched exactly."

F. De Vries — Attachment Technician, Netherlands

★★★★★Mar 2026

"We use the EP-HCYY11112030 on our heavy-duty paper roll clamps. At 38 kg it's substantial, but the 25 MPa / Φ125 bore provides the clamping force we need for 2-tonne rolls. After 10 months of daily use, the seals are still tight — no leakage."

G. Rossi — Maintenance Manager, Italy

★★★★☆Nov 2025

"Good quality side shift cylinder — the Φ70 bore, 300 mm stroke model. Lateral movement is smooth and precise. Cost is about 40% below the Cascade original part. Delivery was 5 weeks."

J. Kim — Forklift Service Manager, South Korea

★★★★★Aug 2025

"The EP-HCYY11112031 is the smallest cylinder in our forklift parts inventory — only 6 kg — but it handles the light-duty side shift function perfectly. We use it on our electric pallet stackers with side shift capability."

W. Nowak — Warehouse Engineer, Poland

★★★★★Apr 2025

"We now source all forklift cylinders from Korea Ever-Power — mast tilt, lifting, steering, plus the attachment positioner and side shift cylinders. Single supplier, single quality standard, simplified procurement."
