On a standard duplex (two-stage) mast, the forklift must extend the outer mast section upward before the carriage can rise \u2014 increasing the overall mast height above the forklift. This is fine in open warehouses, but creates problems in height-restricted spaces: shipping containers (internal height ~2.4 m), box trucks, aircraft cargo holds, and buildings with low ceilings or overhead obstructions.<\/p>\n

A triple-stage (triplex) mast solves this with a “free-lift” stage \u2014 an initial lifting range where the carriage rises without the outer mast sections moving at all. The short lifting cylinder provides this free-lift. It is mounted centrally in the inner mast channel and lifts the carriage through its 775\u2013800 mm stroke before the main lifting cylinders begin extending the outer mast sections.<\/p>\n

The result: the forklift can raise a load to approximately 1,500\u20131,600 mm (free-lift height, including chain multiplication) without any increase in overall mast height \u2014 allowing it to pick up and place pallets inside containers, trucks, and low-ceiling environments where a standard mast would not fit.
