The 2-stage is the simplest. The 5-stage is the most compact. The 4-stage telescopic hydraulic cylinder sits between them — compact enough for most large dump truck frames, but with one fewer seal set than the 5-stage. For dump trucks in the 10–30 tonne range, the 4-stage is the most commonly specified configuration: the engineering sweet spot where compactness, reliability, cost, and force output are all balanced.
The 4-stage retracts to approximately 32–40% of its extended length — compact enough for the majority of dump truck chassis frames in the 10–30 tonne class, but without the 5-stage's four seal sets (the 4-stage has three). One fewer seal set means one fewer potential leak path, slightly less manufacturing complexity, and a cost point between the 3-stage and 5-stage. Korea Ever-Power manufactures this 4-stage cylinder with professional craftsmanship: CNC-machined barrel sections, precision-honed bores, qualified welding procedures, and branded seals — producing a telescopic cylinder built to last under the repetitive, heavy-load demands of dump truck tipping duty.

Why 4-Stage Is the Most Popular Choice for Medium-to-Large Dump Trucks
The 4-stage telescopic cylinder occupies the practical middle ground in the stage count spectrum. It avoids the excessive retracted length of the 3-stage while avoiding the excessive complexity and cost of the 5-stage. For the majority of dump trucks in the 10–30 tonne class, the 4-stage delivers the required stroke within the available frame depth — making it the most commonly specified stage count for this vehicle range.
| Stage | Retracted Ratio | Seal Sets | Cost Index | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | ~40–50% | 2 | 1.0× | Small-medium trucks with deeper frames |
| 4 | ~32–40% | 3 | ~1.2× | Most 10–30t dump trucks (sweet spot) |
| 5 | ~25–30% | 4 | ~1.4–1.6× | Tight frames only — maximum compactness |
Approximately 15–20% shorter retracted length at the same stroke. This difference — typically 100–200 mm — is often the margin that determines whether the cylinder fits under the dump truck frame or not. For trucks in the 10–20 tonne class with standard frame depths of 500–700 mm, the 4-stage fits where the 3-stage does not.
One fewer seal set (3 vs 4), simpler manufacturing, approximately 15–25% lower cost, and higher force on the innermost stage (the 4th stage retains more bore area than the 5th stage in a 5-stage cylinder). If the 4-stage retracted length fits the frame, the 5-stage offers no benefit — only added cost and complexity.
Professional Craftsmanship — The Manufacturing Process Behind the 4-Stage
"Professional craftsmanship" means the manufacturing process follows controlled, repeatable procedures at every step — from raw material inspection to final pressure test. Each procedure is documented, each tool is calibrated, and each operator is qualified for the operation they perform.

Barrel sections, end caps, port bosses, and mounting brackets are machined on CNC lathes and mills — not manual machines. CNC provides repeatable dimensional accuracy across production batches: the 100th cylinder matches the 1st cylinder within the programmed tolerance. For 4-stage cylinders with four barrel sections, CNC consistency ensures the nested stages fit together with the correct clearances every time.
Each of the four stage bores is honed to a controlled surface finish using dedicated honing machines. The honing process creates the cross-hatch pattern that retains the oil film for seal lubrication — too rough and the seal wears prematurely; too smooth and the oil film breaks down. Professional honing targets the specific surface finish range that maximises seal life for each bore diameter.
Pressure-containing welds are executed by certified welders following qualified welding procedure specifications (WPS). Each weld type (end cap, port boss, mounting bracket) has its own WPS that defines the current, voltage, travel speed, and pre/post heat treatment. The welder qualification and WPS compliance are core elements of the ISO 9001 quality management system — the cylinders cannot be manufactured without them.

4 Stage Dump Truck Cylinder — Technical FAQ
Field Reports
The 4-stage is our standard specification for 15–25 tonne dump truck bodies. We evaluated 3-stage (too long retracted for our standard frame), 5-stage (unnecessarily complex and 25% more expensive), and settled on 4-stage as the sweet spot. Ever-Power 4-stage, 5-inch bore, 80-inch stroke, SAE ports. 18 units delivered over 6 months. CNC machining quality is evident in the dimensional consistency — every barrel section is concentric, the stages extend smoothly, and the bore finish is uniform across all units. Professional product.
We build 12-tonne tippers for the Spanish construction market. The 4-stage from Ever-Power delivers 1,800 mm stroke in a 640 mm retracted package — fits our frame with 40 mm clearance. BSP G-thread, 4-inch bore. The weld quality on the end caps is visibly professional — clean, continuous, no porosity. We've ordered 40 units across 4 batches. The honing quality is consistent — we've never had a seal failure attributable to bore finish. Annual agreement pricing now in effect.
Replaced the 4-stage hoist cylinder on a 20-tonne dump truck. The Ever-Power cylinder matched the original dimensions precisely. Four stars because the paint finish on the barrel was slightly thinner than expected — cosmetic only, no functional impact. We're adding a clear-coat to our prep procedure before installation. The craftsmanship of the machining, honing, and welding is excellent — no complaints on the engineering quality. The cylinder operates flawlessly after 4 months of daily hauling.
