2 Stage Small Dump Truck Hydraulic Cylinder — Multistage Telescopic
SMALL DUMP TRUCK
2 Stage Hydraulic Cylinder
for Small Dump Trucks
The compact telescopic for compact trucks.
Small dump trucks — mini tippers under 3.5 tonnes, utility dump vehicles, landscaping trucks, and compact commercial haulers up to 7.5 tonnes GVW — have chassis frames that are a fraction of the size of highway dump trucks. The 2-stage telescopic hydraulic cylinder is often the only multistage configuration that fits within these miniature chassis rails while delivering the tipping stroke needed to raise the dump body to discharge angle.
The defining constraint of a small dump truck is space — not force. A 2-inch bore telescopic cylinder at standard working pressures produces more than enough force to tip a 3-tonne dump body. The challenge is fitting the cylinder within the narrow, shallow chassis rails of a vehicle designed for urban streets and residential construction sites, not highway hauling. The 2-stage telescopic cylinder addresses this space constraint with the fewest stages, the fewest seals, and the most reliable package — delivering the stroke that small dump truck frames demand without the complexity and cost of 3 or 4-stage alternatives.

Small Dump Truck — Why the 2-Stage Is the Right Fit
Small dump trucks operate in a different engineering envelope from highway haulers. The payloads are lighter (1–5 tonnes), the dump bodies are shorter, the chassis frames are narrower, and the available mounting depth under the frame is typically 300–500 mm. Within this compact envelope, the 2-stage telescopic cylinder provides three advantages that directly address small dump truck requirements.
A 2-stage telescopic cylinder at the 2–3 inch bore range weighs only a few kilograms — light enough for a single technician to handle, position, and install without lifting equipment. Small dump trucks are often serviced in small workshops or even roadside, where a crane or hoist is not available. The light weight of the 2-stage eliminates the lifting equipment requirement that larger telescopic cylinders demand.
Small dump trucks have chassis frame widths of 500–700 mm between the rails — significantly narrower than highway dump trucks. The 2-stage telescopic cylinder, with its single outer barrel and one inner plunger, has a smaller external diameter than a 3 or 4-stage cylinder at the same stroke. The outer barrel bore determines the external diameter, and the 2-stage uses the smallest outer barrel for any given inner stage bore.
A small dump truck has a lower purchase price than a highway hauler — and the hoist cylinder should be cost-proportional to the vehicle. The 2-stage is the lowest-cost telescopic cylinder configuration: fewer precision-honed bores, fewer seal sets, shorter assembly time. The cost saving over a 3-stage at the same stroke can be 20–35%, which is significant for a vehicle class where total cost of ownership is the primary purchasing criterion.
Small Dump Truck Applications

Mini Tippers (<3.5t GVW)
Mini dump trucks based on light commercial vehicle chassis — Kei trucks, 1-tonne utility vehicles, and sub-3.5 tonne tippers used for residential construction, garden landscaping, municipal parks maintenance, and small-scale earthmoving. The 2-stage at 2-inch bore with 18–30 inch stroke is the typical configuration for this vehicle class.
Utility Dump Trucks (3.5–7.5t)
Medium-duty utility dump trucks for construction site support, material delivery, snow removal, and road maintenance. The 2-stage at 3–4 inch bore with 30–48 inch stroke handles payloads of 2–5 tonnes. These vehicles operate in urban environments where compact dimensions, easy manoeuvrability, and quick tip-and-go cycles are essential.
Landscaping & Garden Trucks
Specialised landscaping vehicles for transporting soil, mulch, gravel, and green waste. The dump body is typically shallow (low-side) to allow hand loading, and the 2-stage cylinder provides just enough tipping angle for gravity discharge of loose materials. Single-acting with metric or BSP ports matched to the vehicle's PTO-driven hydraulic pump.

2 Stage Small Dump Truck Cylinder — Technical FAQ
Field Reports
We build dump bodies for Kei-class mini trucks — the smallest commercial dump vehicles on Japanese roads. The 2-stage from Ever-Power at 2-inch bore and 20-inch stroke fits perfectly within our 420 mm frame depth. Metric M-thread ports match our standard fittings. We've installed 35 units across 3 production batches. The retracted length is consistently within 1 mm of the drawing specification — critical for our precision-built bodies. Each cylinder weighs under 4 kg, so our assemblers handle them by hand. Zero returns in 10 months of service.
Replaced the original tipping cylinder on our landscaping dump truck — a 5-tonne utility tipper that hauls soil, mulch, and green waste daily. The old cylinder was leaking at the plunger seal after 4 years of service. Sent the measurements to Ever-Power, received the 2-stage replacement in 28 days. SAE ports, 3-inch bore, 36-inch stroke. Installed it myself in about 40 minutes — the cylinder weighs maybe 8 kg, easy to handle solo. Tipping is smooth, no leaks. Cost was about half of the local hydraulic shop's quote for a rebuild of the old cylinder.
We manufacture electric mini dump trucks for municipal and industrial use. The 2-stage telescopic cylinder pairs well with our 24V DC hydraulic power unit — the cylinder doesn't care whether the pump is PTO-driven or electric-driven, it just needs the pressure and flow. 2.5-inch bore, 24-inch stroke, metric ports. Four stars because our first order specified a non-standard mounting bracket angle, and the factory needed an additional revision cycle to get it correct. Second order onwards has been flawless — 20 units delivered with correct custom brackets. The cylinder works perfectly on our electric platform.
