A telescoping truck crane boom consists of multiple nested sections that slide inside each other. To extend the boom, one section must be pinned (locked) while the adjacent section extends hydraulically. The pin cylinder inserts a hardened steel pin through matching holes in adjacent sections — creating a temporary rigid connection.
The 225 mm stroke provides enough travel to fully insert and retract the locking pin through the boom section wall thickness — typically two walls (inner and outer section) of 15–25 mm each, plus clearance. Pin cylinders must be extremely reliable — a pin that fails to insert leaves the boom section unlocked, which can lead to uncontrolled boom collapse under load.
